Since Keith's talk...

I already have decided to do my thesis or core project in a 5th year.

After Keiths talk with our class, I've been considering doing the 4K01 and 4K02 option. I'm not sure how this affects coming up with thesis proposals, but I think that it is good preparation to come up with ideas to explore the option.

I really like how straight forward the 4K option sounds...

INTERIORS

I decided to post about interiors, because I have interest in the decor of inside spaces. I do NOT care much about interior design, but instead, the decorating part.

I took a course at Humber college a few years ago about Interior Design, and all misconceptions in my mind about interior design were blown out of the water. Interior DESIGN is all about spacing, the width of a hallway, where to place electrical outlets, doors, windows, plumbing, ETC. Too technical for me to be interested.

In that course I was never required to look at one textile, paint swatch, couch cushion... NONE. I did however build many models of interior spaces, measure a room, draft it, then build it, and just a lot of drafting in general.Rather disappointing to me. But at least I found the truth and found out what I don't want.

One things that interests me about interior decorating, is similar to the concept of collage, bringing pieces of everything you love together. Beautiful textures, rich colours, sheer fabric, antique furniture, artwork, minimal design... In interior spaces, things from all over the place, so many favourite things can be brought together and contribute to a masterpiece.

I am really interested in how a interior space has the ability to control the atmosphere and set a mood, and describe the intention for the space. Decor has the ability to set a professional atmosphere in a high end store or classy office, a children's playroom or kindergarten class is easily defined by it's decor and a sophisticated livingroom is defined by its decor compared to a laid back casual livingroom, an this doesn't even depend on the people living in it... the decor will say it all.

A mixture of colours, textures, furniture stlyes, trim, fabric, ETC will communicate what a space is about... and there is so much potential to communicate SO MANY THINGS. And with the ability to communicate a wide variety of things, there is so much freedom and opportunity for expression and individuality.

Anyways, I have attached a whole bunch of interiors that i ENJOY :)

The more graphic and 2-dimensional that an image appears, I would pair it with techno/electronic music.

Music-Type Poster

As mentioned in previous blog posts, I like to work with the relation of music and art. For my typography class, I made a poster which are lyrics to the song, First Train Home, by Imogen Heap. I translated what I felt from the song into a visual expression. I matched the rhythms and melodies with shapes, letter and colours.

LIGHTS MUSIC ART

I enjoy the mixture of music and art, and how they can fit and complement each other so well. As a visual/feelings oriented thinker, I can go crazy in my mind sometimes visually when I listen to music, just because I picture tons of shapes colours and images and things that are trippy.

So when I do work that is related to music or is a musical expression, I really enjoy it and find it to be fitting to what I do best.

I was at a Muse concert this past Monday, and I found it to be SO WELL DONE because they matched the visualizations and lighting so well with the awesomeness of their music.

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

I am REALLY interested in this subject, because I find the school system to not have fit me very well. Watching a video like this points out the problem and explains why it is wrong.

Also, in a book I'm reading, A Whole New Mind, by Daniel H Pink, he states that the school system was formed at the same time the Industrial Revolution happened. This happened so that people could become educated in order to operate machinery and other things. Because of this, the school system HIGHLY favours Math, Science, Social Sciences etc, and at the bottom, as bird courses are the arts, Visual Arts and Music are most comon, then drama and dance are the very lowest.

I love in the video where the dude talks about the girl who couldn't concentrate or sit still, they couldn't figure out what was "wrong" with her. Eventually, while she was left in a room by herself with music on, she was on her feet dancing in seconds. The parents and teachers figured out that the girl was made to dance. So, she was enrolled into a dance school. It turned out to be the best thing ever for her, she learned so much and started her own school of dance when she grew up, and now is some crazy influential person.

They were about to diagnose her as ADD and give her pills. All she needed was to dance.

It really interests me to create a place where people can allow their creativity to live, rather than when it pretty much dies, because it isn't valued or given a proper environment where it can flourish.

I am SO annoyed when super right brained people are assumed to be flawed bc they are in a highly left brained environment and aren't functioning properly.
