Do Schools Kill Creativity?
I am REALLY interested in this subject, because I find the school system to not have fit me very well. Watching a video like this points out the problem and explains why it is wrong.
Also, in a book I'm reading, A Whole New Mind, by Daniel H Pink, he states that the school system was formed at the same time the Industrial Revolution happened. This happened so that people could become educated in order to operate machinery and other things. Because of this, the school system HIGHLY favours Math, Science, Social Sciences etc, and at the bottom, as bird courses are the arts, Visual Arts and Music are most comon, then drama and dance are the very lowest.
I love in the video where the dude talks about the girl who couldn't concentrate or sit still, they couldn't figure out what was "wrong" with her. Eventually, while she was left in a room by herself with music on, she was on her feet dancing in seconds. The parents and teachers figured out that the girl was made to dance. So, she was enrolled into a dance school. It turned out to be the best thing ever for her, she learned so much and started her own school of dance when she grew up, and now is some crazy influential person.
They were about to diagnose her as ADD and give her pills. All she needed was to dance.
It really interests me to create a place where people can allow their creativity to live, rather than when it pretty much dies, because it isn't valued or given a proper environment where it can flourish.
I am SO annoyed when super right brained people are assumed to be flawed bc they are in a highly left brained environment and aren't functioning properly.
